Our Story

The Upper Cape Women’s Coalition is a grassroots organization that began in 2017 to work politically on behalf of women and girls by building an equitable, healthy and inclusive community. Our focus is on Upper Cape Cod, including the towns of Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich.

Our goal, in short, is to protect the well-being of women and girls. To attain that goal, we support the efforts of like-minded public officials, and we endorse and support like-minded candidates for public office. We also provide our communities with critical information concerning public policies and prioritize and advocate for legislation that furthers our goals. We engage in and encourage public discussion of those rights through community outreach that is civil and respectful.

Our Guiding Principles:

  • Our lives are safe.
  • Our bodies are respected.
  • Our work is valued.
  • Our families are supported.
  • We are represented.

Activities We Take to Further Our Goals

We Advocate, Lobby, Influence, and Educate by:

  • Researching and prioritizing legislation supporting our mission
  • Working directly with our legislators to advocate and inform them of our public policy agenda and to encourage their support
  • Building liaisons and collaborating with local, state, and federal women’s groups
  • Endorsing Upper Cape Cod political candidates
  • Sponsoring women’s events and educational programs via social media, press, and television
  • Engaging in and encouraging civil and respectful public discussion of our rights.

We Do This through Three Collaborative Teams Coordinated by Our Executive Committee

  • Legislation and Policy
  • Education and Outreach
  • Endorsements and Elections

Legislation and Policy

At the start of every legislative session, we identify limited proposed state legislation that aligns specifically with our mission. We track those bills and work with legislative sponsors and coalitions to advance them through the legislative process. We also identify and support a broader set of initiatives through endorsements.

  • Legislative oversight responsibilities
  • 2023-2024 Legislative Priorities
  • Past Session

Endorsements and Elections

Our focus is on the health and safety of women and girls. Toward this end we follow elections in our region, interview candidates for possible endorsement, and write recommendations and letters of endorsement.

  • Build outreach support
  • Track elections
  • Interview and evaluate candidates

Outreach and Education

UCWC advocates for the rights of women and girls with fast-action standouts, letters to the editor, social media posts, and email. We create advocacy materials, build coalitions with like-minded groups, and plan print, social media, YouTube, and local television programming.

  • Fast response actions
  • Networking
  • Program planning and communication
